REMINDER: Castro Street Design Workshop Tomorrow

Castro Street Design Project Boundary Map

As we previously reported, the city will be moving forward with plans to redesign the length of Castro Street between Market and 19th. The San Francisco Planning Department will be unveiling their preliminary design concept for the redesign tomorrow at the Eureka Valley Recreation Center auditorium from 6PM to 8PM.

In 2008, the Castro/Upper Market Community Benefits District worked with Urban Ecology to develop a streetscape plan for Castro Street. The plan called for sidewalk widening, intersection improvements, new street trees, landscaping, lighting, and other amenities.

In 2011, San Francisco voters passed the Road Repaving and Streets Safety Bond. With the support of Supervisor Scott Wiener, funds from this bond have been allocated toward the planning and construction of Castro Street improvements.

The City’s Castro Street Design Project will use ideas generated in the 2008 plan as the foundation for creating a community-based streetscape design for Castro Street.

Set aside some time tomorrow between 6-8PM to check out the preliminary plan the city has put together and provide your input on the project specifics.

I wonder if the right turn lane on to Market of northbound Castro is going to be eliminated? If it is, that’s going to create a bottleneck for vehicular traffic at that intersection that may back up vehicles all the way to 18th Street, AND slow down the #24. Add the double-park MO of such companies as UPS and FedEx, and it has the makings of a problem.
Will the parking spaces on those blocks be eliminated?

Still, I’m in favor of wider sidewalks.

Ramon – Your input sounds valuable. You should attend the workshop meetings and add your ideas. I think the Plan is still being developed and your input will be beneficial.

Left and right turn arrows at 18th Streets would help traffic flow.

Uniform trees, street lighting same as Market Street, Sparkling cement, get rid of the newspaper ped mounts/boxes.
