The Bay Area Reporter and Grub Street reported that George “Jorge” Maumer, owner of Superstar Video on Castro Street, will be opening a new restaurant called The Castro Sausage Grill below the Castro Country Club at 4058 18th Street pending Planning Commission approval. Maumer is currently in the process of liquidating Superstar Video to make way for the new tenants, the SF AIDS Foundation and Magnet.

He purchased the building that houses the sober gathering space last year and will continue to honor their lease while getting their upstairs location rezoned for nonresidential use. The restaurant will be located in the recently renovated garage space and also provide outdoor seating in the front driveway area. Maumer is seeking a liquor license for the restaurant, which some people found ironic with a sober gathering space located right above, but alcohol is easily accessible all over the Castro and if someone wanted it, they can easily walk 15 feet to the Mix or to the 7 Eleven down the street. The BAR reported that the Castro Country Club leaders told the Planning Commission they had no objection to the restaurant.

The Planning Commission will hold a vote on the proposed restaurant at its February 7th meeting.

  1. It’s nice they’ll have outdoor seating, but it’ll be in a cloud of cigarette smoke from the country clubbers…

Irony has nothing to do with it. There are more than a dozen bars within two blocks of the Country Club and look at all there are in The City. It is the job of the alcoholic to live with alcohol not against it.

While it’s true that alcohol is available within 15 feet in any direction, I think it’s just rude to open it up where the smell of beer and sausages will permeate the meeting spaces upstairs.

I doubt the smell of beer is going to permeate through the floorboards, but as one of the other commenters noted, the alcoholic is responsible for living with alcohol, not against it. I know plenty of sober people that won’t bat an eye.

Great, another restaurant in the neighborhood. Let’s just hope they service QUALITY and are CLEAN.

In other news today Roy, did you see Diesel has shut down?? Rumors I’m hearing is that Apple is interested in the space. This would be a major boom for the Castro and HELP our small businesses and restaurants.

  5. I noticed last night that Diesel has shut down and was curious as to why no post had gone up about it.

I share the same concern as Jeph with the outdoor seating. Anytime you walk by that space there’s almost always a crowd gathered outside smoking. I’m curious how they will handle that with the outdoor seating.

Diesel shut down? Wow. Id love an Apple Store there.

I hope the Castro Sausage Eatery is a success, especially if it means that the building can remain.

How soon til SuperStar Video closes?

Regarding this comment, and the like “I doubt the smell of beer is going to permeate through the floorboards,…I know plenty of sober people that won’t bat an eye.”
Let me put it in terms that you might relate to – pretend that Adam and Eve’s Hetero-Go-Go moved in to the Badlands. It’s the job of the homosexual to live with the heterosexuals, not against them! I hope that gives a little bit of persepctive, at least.
