Supervisors approve Wiener in-law unit legislation

In a unanimous vote today, the SF Board of Supervisors approved Supervisor Scott Wiener’s legislation to allow the construction of new in-law units (or accessory dwelling units) in the Castro area. New units must be fully functioning with a bathroom and kitchen and be no smaller than 220 sqft and no larger than 750 sqft. The legislation applies only to properties within 1750 feet of the Castro Street Neighborhood Commercial District.

During last month’s discussion of the newly passed legislation, the Planning Commission encouraged Supervisor Wiener to consider including verbiage from Supervisor David Chiu’s legislation which is looking to legalize existing in-law units that meet code requirements throughout the city. It is not clear from the Supervisor’s press release whether or not considerations were made.

When we communicated with Supervisor Wiener last month, he mentioned that some neighbors had approached him with interest in building in-law units into their properties, but was not sure how many homeowners would participate and thus how many new units would be made available or how soon.

With the city’s current housing crisis, any little bit helps. Hopefully the Board of Supervisors have some more plans up their sleeves to help relieve the city’s housing woes.

    Go to Vancouver sometime and wander around the (very gay) West End neighborhood, then please report back to us on how awful their quality of life is because of all the residential high-rises.

      I have to admit my knowledge of Vancouver real estate is limited, but are you talking about the development site where they put high rise condos and apartments into a park-like setting? Each building set off by green space? I remember walking through that neighborhood and being impressed, though it was years ago.

      Sorry if I’m confusing the area you’re speaking of with another, though.
