It’s been nearly a year since Proposition 8, the California anti-gay law that defined lawful marriage as being exclusively between a man and a woman, was struck down by the United States Supreme Court in Hollingsworth v. Perry. June 26th marks the one year anniversary of both the Prop 8 decision and the Supreme Court also striking down the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), the federal law that allowed other states to refuse to recognize same-sex marriages granted under the laws of other states and effectively barred same-sex married couples from receiving federal marriage benefits.

Castro bookstore, Books, Inc., is celebrating the one year anniversary of these landmark decisions by bringing the lawyers who argued the Prop 8 case for a Q&A session to the SF LGBT Community Center (1800 Market Street) the week of Pride. June 25th at 7PM lawyers David Boies and Theodore B. Olson will be discussing there joint book, Redeeming the Dream: The Case for Marriage Equality.

Selected by Time magazine as two of the 100 Most Influential People in the World in 2010, David Boies and Theodore B. Olson argued opposing sides in Bush v. Gore in 2000. In 2009 the unlikely pair united, seeking to overturn California’s unconstitutional ban on gay marriage, Proposition 8. Redeeming the Dream is the fascinating story of this alliance, and the titanic five-year battle to win the right for gays to marry, from Proposition 8’s adoption by voters in 2008, to its defeat before the highest court in the land in Hollingsworth v. Perry in 2013.

Tickets for this event are $35 and include a signed first-edition of Redeeming the Dream. Get your tickets here.
