UPDATE: Castro getting its first gay burlesque club

RR-SFIt’s official! The Castro is getting its first gay burlesque-style club. We reported before on the murmurings of a strip club coming to the iconic building that Diesel just vacated at Market and Castro. Well, the investor group that purchased the location just put out a press release on their updated website announcing the club (and restaurant) officially,

An investor group announced that RR-SF, an upscale restaurant and gay burlesque club with a philanthropic approach, is planned for the historic corner of Castro & Market. RR-SF is a socially responsible business designed to support local community organizations by donating a percentage of the proceeds to local groups.

The group of investors have undertaken the purchase of the historically significant location at the corner of Market and Castro, formerly inhabited by Diesel, to convert the previously troubled retail space into their flagship venue. After the opening of the San Francisco location, RR-SF plans to expand to several other US cities including, Los Angeles, Chicago, New York and Dallas.

“Our aim is to bring an upscale dining and entertainment experience to the Castro and the gay community at large,” said RR-SF spokesman Adam Alberti. “RR-SF seeks to fill a void, offering high caliber burlesque style entertainment in a clean, safe, and high-end environment that will give back to the very community where it is located,” he said.

During the day and evening, the restaurant will offer locally sourced and sustainable dining options with designer cocktails and premium wine and liquor. Inspired by the Crazy Horse in Paris, RR-SF will offer tasteful burlesque style entertainment for gay gentlemen, a service currently not offered in the City.

RR-SF is embracing a new cashless model that will raise the integrity of the institution, promoting team work rather than competition among employees.  A percentage of money patrons spend will be donated to a community organization of their choice, selected upon entering the club. The philanthropic aspect of RR-SF creates a respectful and socially conscious mindset that will benefit the establishment, clientele and the local community.

Burlesque-style entertainment paints a better visual than “strip club,” though, let’s not mince words, we’re still probably going to be seeing a lot of skin. Probably no more than underwear night at 440 or Booty Call Wednesdays at QBar.

Do you think this club will be good for the Castro? Will you go when it opens?

The new restaurant/bar Dante’s Table (544 Castro Street), located in the old Dancing Pig location, softly opened late last week. Jay Barmann over at Grubstreet SF setup a great slideshow of what the new restaurant’s interior looks like. Custom murals from John Baden adorn the walls with quotes from Dante’s Divine Comedy near the ceiling in the front dining area.

The menu consists of a variety of different Italian dishes with pizza taking center stage and a pasta dish and a steak dish rounding out the dinner selections. The restaurant will also be open during the day for breakfast, featuring coffee and pastries, and lunch service in the afternoon.

Owner Franceso D’Ippolito (also owner of Poesia around the corner) wants the place to be a “point of encounter” where you would meet friends for a cocktail and a bite to eat, decide what to do next, and then hit the Castro for a night on the town.

While the restaurant softly opened to the public this weekend, their official opening day is this Wednesday, May 1st. The restaurant will be open Tue-Sun for lunch and dinner with lunch from 11:30AM – 2:30PM and dinner from 5 -10PM with breakfast hours coming soon.

End of Week Updates: Nude Activists Convicted, Castro’s New Bulging Baskets (of Flowers) & More

This week has raced by and April is nearly at an end. Summer is looming as spring draws to a close and we find ourselves checking back in on a  number of posts to find out what their status is. In no particular order or level of import here goes:

Nude activists, Russell ‘Trey’ Allen, Oxane ‘Gypsy’ Taub and Dist. 8 Supervisor candidate, George Davis were arrested and cited for violating the brand new nudity ban when they showed the full monty at a rally outside City Hall on Feb. 1 that we posted on, the day the ordinance went into effect. On Tues. the 23rd all were found guilty. They now hold the double honor of first arrested and first convicted under the Wiener Nudity Ban. They were each ordered to pay a $100 fine and $92 in court fees. Their Defense attorney Christina DiEdoardo plans to appeal in 30 days. Miss Taub and Mr. Stevens will be facing the judge again following a second arrest for dancing nude at Jane Warner Plaza.

flowers-one-castroThe 3rd Annual Flowers on Castro Benefit sponsored by the Castro Community Business District (CBD) and Herth Realty on April 18th that we posted about was a smashing success according to all who attended and CBD Exec Director, Andrea Aiello raising 2,000 more than the previous year. The event held at Herth Realty’s office on Castro St.  brought in over 10,334 dollars toward their 15,000 dollar goal in donations and art sales that will be used to replace and maintain the neighborhoods hanging baskets of flora. On Tuesday ten new baskets were installed along the village’s main strip. Art is still available for purchase at Herth’s office and you can peruse it as you will or donations can be made directly here. Special thanks to all the artists whose work was used, restaurants  Pica Pica, Fable and Poesia for providing the food and Swirl who supplied wine for the event. Pix from the event here.

SF State Sen. Mark Leno

SF State Sen. Mark Leno

Early this week we posted Sen. Mark Leno had introduced a bill, SB 635, that would allow individual communities to decide to extend their bar and clubs last calls from the current California limit of 2 AM to 4 AM. Despite a large push for the bill from within the Entertainment and Nightlife Industry the bill was rejected in committee. This is the second time our Senator has introduced this legislation. It has the ability to be brought back again before committee but not this year. It will have to go back and start its upstream swim again through political shark infested waters.  Mr. Leno has made noise that he believes that with the growing number of constituents in favor of the bill the next time up will see a different result. Who knows-maybe three times the charm?

And finally, Dist. 9 Supervisor David Campos’ push to rename SFO for Harvey Milk continues to seek its last supporter from among the other members of the Board of Supervisors so it can move forward. We’ve been posting on this issue since it broke. So far he has five out of the six co-sponsors from his fellows to go forward. Where the elusive sixth nod will come from has proven difficult. The freshmen members of the BOS-Norman Yee, London Breed and recent Mayor Lee appointee for Dist 4 Katy Tang-have been reluctant to sign on. Citing a variety of concerns from cost of the name change to the City or constituent balking at the idea-many think other titans of SF politics and civic duty are equally deserving as Milk have been used by the new Supes to withhold sponsorship. Campos remains undeterred and believes that in the end he will be triumphant.

New State Bill Extending Last Call Would Affect Castro Bars and Nightlife

SF State Sen. Mark Leno

SF State Sen. Mark Leno

San Francisco’s (D) State Senator,  Mark Leno, has introduced a new bill, SB 635, that would allow bars and clubs to serve alcohol until 4AM. The Castro, chock full of bars and restaurants with full bars who’s economy and reputation is often tied to its nightlife fun, would be greatly affected by this law change

For years those within the SF Nightlife/Bar/Entertainment Industry have bemoaned the early shut down of fun in the City. Most major metropolises in the US and worldwide have a much later last call. They’ve stated that the current 2 AM cut off point for alcohol enacted under the administration of former CA Governor than President Ronald Reagan is draconian and equates to millions of dollars of lost revenue and taxes for the City and State.

Many others disagree and think the time should remain static. Sen. Leno expects resistance from groups and organizations concerned about late-night noise, drunk driving and general debauchery. He also, points out that if the measure becomes law, it would serve only to create an option. Each community within the State could choose wether or not to extend hours rather than be dictated to.

SF's famous Irish Coffee

SF’s famous Irish Coffee

“The bill offers cities an opportunity to create jobs, expand business and increase tax revenue. It imposes nothing on anybody; it merely authorizes the opportunity.” He said.

The fact is, according to a 2012 San Francisco Nightlife Economic Impact Report Sup. Scott Wiener commissioned, the SF Nightlife Industry produces nearly 4.2 billion dollars worth of revenue yearly, employs 48,000 people and served 80 million customers in 2010. That kind of tax base and revenue shouldn’t be ignored and if this law expansion goes through we can expect to see those numbers seriously rise.

At a town hall meeting held this past January on Safety in the Castro many neighbors came and voiced concerns, anger and a few even unbridled outrage around the behavior some patrons of local bars and restaurants exhibit on a nightly basis. Many also blamed increase in crime on bar patrons and others point to the environmental impact of a louder neighborhood and increased litter, human waste and general human mayhem that ensues as a result of the bars presence.

SFPD Chief Greg Suhr is also skeptical about extending the last call deadline. He has been trying to initiate a plan to deal with habitual drunks and out of control drinkers for some time. It’s estiamted that corralling booze hounds in the City costs the taxpayers millions. He wants chronic drunks arrested five times in 30 days to be given the option of jail or treatment. The SFPD also worries how two more hours of drinking would translate into criminal incidents and how that would impact the department and the City economically.

LA Dist 8 Supervisor Bernard Parks

LA Dist 8 Supervisor Bernard Parks

Those who support Sen. Leno and SB 635 have started a Change.org petition and a Facebook page. Those opposed have also wasted little time organizing as well. LA Supe and former LAPD Chief, Bernard Parks, has led the charge organizing ‘Stop Leno’s 4AM Bill’.

The bill will soon come up for a vote. We will keep an eye out for details and pass on the results.

UPDATE: as the bill stands it will only immediately apply to establishments who currently have an after hours license in communities that choose to extend hours-it is not mandatory. No bar in the Castro currently has one of these special permits. These conditional licenses however are not like finite SF alcohol permits. Any bar could apply for one and, if conditions are met, receive one after paying the required fee. If SB 635 becomes law and established bars see after hours clubs reaping the benefits of extended hours of sales associated with after hours permits more will apply to get their share of this new revenue stream.

Sup. Wiener Takes on Board Over Privacy Issues in Bars & Clubs

Recently over at the DNA Lounge’s blog, the popular SOMA nightclub and home to Trannyshack, we read they’d been told by SFPD that they must, “install video surveillance that records everything our customers do, and to give that footage to SFPD any time they ask, without a warrant or explanation.” They flat-out refused.

Sup. Wiener in a laid back moment gettin' his swerve on.

Sup. Wiener in a laid back moment gettin’ his swerve on.

We found this a disturbing and chilling development. How many Castro bars and nightclubs have been approached by SFPD to install customer spyware? Doesn’t it violate privacy rights?

Seems we weren’t the only concerned. Tuesday at the Board of Supes (BOS) meeting two new spots who’s beer/wine permits are contingent on fulfilling this legally suspect requirement came up for review and approval. Only Sup. Scott Wiener from the Castro’s Dist. 8 opposed based on his privacy concerns involving the camera requirement.

The SF BOS is peppered with liberals like Supervisors Avalos, Campos and Kim it seems odd that the right to privacy and potential Constitutional issue is being championed by one of the few moderates on the Board known for his more conservative views.

The way this works: the City is calling the new, up till now, under the radar policy, ‘Conditional Licensing’. Meaning, if you want to open a bar/nightclub business in our town with any kind of booze, you have to adhere to special requirements to obtain the permit.

The condition was placed within the process by the SFPD with the approving nod from CA Dept. of Alcoholic Beverage Control. It requires surveillance of the doorways of the business, and that the footage be stored for at least 30 days and turned over to police upon request. They believe this is an important tool to have to combat potential crime.

According to DNA’s blog they were informed by the City’s Entertainment Commission, generally the arbitrator of all things fun in SF, this condition is now standard with every new permit being forked out by the City, and, everyone else has been unwilling or uneasy about challenging it since the permits are so hard to get in the first place.

In the SF Examiner on Tuesday Sup. Wiener made his concerns crystal clear. He believes the requirement could be an effort by the Police Department to eventually enact a citywide policy of surveillance at all bars by adding the condition as individual liquor licenses come up for approval or renewal.

“In the LGBT community for Gay bars, there are people who are not out of the closet who go into these bars and they don’t want to be recorded,” Wiener said.

Tom Temprano, 2nd from the left, with members of the Harvey Milk Dem. Club.

I spoke with Tom Temprano, President of the Harvey Milk Democratic Club (HMDC),aka DJ Carnitas of Hard French fame, about these new permit developments during the Equality March last week.

Tom is also a new bar owner. He recently purchased Naps III next to El Rio on Mission St. He and many others in the City’s Entertainment Industry, an $80 million dollar a year revenue and tax base boon for SF, are deeply concerned. Bar owner and staff feel this is the wrong direction for the City to be going in its approach to combating potential crime and violence at City bars and clubs.

He revealed he is meeting with Sup. Wiener later today to discuss the situation and see how the HMDC can weigh in on the issue.

Given the precarious historical relationship between the LGBT community and the police I tend to think no one is going to like the idea of being photographed, tracked and recorded for some who knows what need of the police.

We will continue to cover the story as it develops and let you know if soon you’ll be under City sanctioned, watchful eye of Big Brother at your favorite local Castro area watering hole.

Midnight Sun getting face-lift, street-facing windows

We learned from Grub Street that the Midnight Sun (4067 18th Street) is currently going through a remodel. Employees have been hearing about plans of a facelift for the 42-year-old bar for over a year and a half now and renovations commenced about a week ago.

Plans for the new design include moving the bathrooms from the front of the bar to the back and making them ADA compliant. This will leave the wall facing 18th street free to place glass windows in. The current bathroom area will serve as an open lounge area that patrons can watch 18th Street from. Fable Restaurant’s interior designer, Craige Walters, will be working on the updated look of the inside.

The Midnight Sun is the last gay bar in the Castro to not yet feature windows looking towards the street. Co-owner Tim Eicher said that one of the reasons it has taken the Midnight Sun so long to add windows facing 18th Street was that the projector technology they had for their jumbo screens flanking the front and the back of the bar would, in the past, not have been able to compete with the ambient light from outside. The Midnight Sun is predominantly a video bar that plays classic and new music videos, funny shorts from SNL, or funny clips from iconic movies like Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion. They even host TV show nights like RuPaul’s Drag Race on Mondays or Project Runway on Thursdays. With projector technology getting sharper and brighter, competing with the ambient light is not as much of a challenge. It’s also nothing a good set of heavy, dark shades can’t help remedy for brighter days.

Eicher said that the bar would be completed in time for Gay Pride festivities in late June with no impact to their business hours save for heavy construction that will see it closed for a day or two.

Old Trigger, new Beaux?

Trigger Bar

Former Trigger Bar (2344 Market Street)

Our friends over at Haighteration were going through the newest liquor licenses posted on the ABC (Alcohol Beverage Control) website and found details on new life coming to Castro’s infamous Trigger bar location (2344 Market Street). It looks like the owners of the bar The Edge (Tim Eicher, Rob Giljum, and Rob Cotterman) will be taking over the space under the name “Beaux.”

The partners took over The Edge at 18th and Collingwood in early 2011 and gave it a facelift and an updated format that has drawn in a young and friendly crowd. Hopefully they can do the same with the 2-level with patio Trigger space and wash away all the negative memories of the unruly patrons and the bougie atmosphere.

We’ve put in a message to Tim Eicher to get more details about the format of the new bar and will update you when we know more. For now, we’re glad to see that another vacant space in the Castro is being filled.
