The Castro Theatre
From the Castro Theaters Calendar of Events: The most popular film noir festival in the world is BACK! Defying media reports regarding the demise of repertory cinema and 35 millimeter film, the next edition of NOIR CITY, coming to the Castro Theatre January 25–February 3, 2013, will present its most expansive schedule yet—27 films—including three brand new 35mm restorations funded by the FNF and the noir-loving moviegoers of San Francisco! As always, NOIR CITY will present both celebrated classics and wonderful rarities: some newly rescued from extinction and presented in glorious new 35mm prints, others screening for the first time in gorgeous 4K digital restorations.
Besides the world premieres of the FNF’s latest film restoration projects: Try and Get Me! (1950),Repeat Performance (1949) and High Tide (1948), we’ll also be presenting the West Coast premiere of the ultra-rare adaption of Richard Wright’s classic Native Son (1951)—starring the author himself. The Film Foundation’s restoration of The Chase (1946) will also have its world premiere at the festival. In addition to celebrating film, NOIR CITY will also present the U.S. premieres of stunning 4K digital restorations of the stupendous Sunset Boulevard (1950) and the locally shot 1962 thriller Experiment in Terror. We will also premiere the 4K digital restorations of two of the very first 3-D movies of 1953,Inferno and Man in the Dark.
